Philmont Scout Ranch: Crew 627-H
Philmont Scout Ranch is a large property owned by the Boy Scouts of America, and it is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico. It is renowned as an extraordinary backpacking trip. This year, a crew from Troop 145 got to trek more than eighty miles across its beautiful backcountry.
Our crew consisted of six boys from Troop 145 (Crew Leader Michael Kubel and Garrett Bowden, Robbie Shouppe, Kyle Smith, Will Struble, and Zach VanZyll) and three adults (Steve Kubel, Bob Shouppe, and Bryant Smith). Upon flying to the Denver airport, the crew met Mr. Shouppe's brother, Dennis Shouppe, and his son, Carl Shouppe. Together, the group took a bus down to Philmont Scout Ranch for the adventure of a lifetime.
In base camp, the eleven people became "Crew 627-H" and met their ranger guide for the next few days: Brett Davison, a young man from the same troop as Dennis and Carl. After taking a bus ride to their starting point, the crew began to hike.
Crew 627-H crossed the rugged terrain, visiting such peaks as Baldy Mountain (pictured), Mt. Philips, and the famous Tooth of Time. They encountered both bears and mini-bears, had to deal with the rain, and lived off crackers with Jalapeño Squeeze Cheese for two weeks. And yet, it was a fantastic and amazing experience. There were views to see, wildlife to watch, and activities to do.
The crew arrived back at base camp exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. They returned home glad to have completed the adventure of a lifetime.
